Construction site thefts leads to desperate measures

Thefts at construction sites have become a common occurrence, forcing employees to implement unconventional methods to safeguard their machinery.

THE developers of the Umgeni Road Interchange at the N2 have devised a novel way to prevent the theft of their expensive construction machinery at the R352 million development.

Commuters travelling along the busy freeway off-ramp were both amused and astonished when they noticed two generators being hoisted  in the air by a crane at the massive construction site to prevent the items from being stolen.

But for the contractors working on the Izinga Estate Development in uMhlanga it was a different story when thieves made off with not only diesel and wheels but also small construction tools.  David Hollands, the development director of Tongaat Hulett, confirmed the theft adding that the thieves targeted a small construction camp of a contractor working at the site.
