La Lucia’s dumbest criminal nabbed

Inept criminal's escape plan thwarted after he got stuck in the ceiling at La Lucia Mall for more than four hours.

A SHOPLIFTER’S plan to escape from police didn’t prove as slick as he had planned after his attempt to get away through the ceiling left him wedged between a metal pipe and a ceiling board, giving authorities a good chuckle when they arrived to free him.

What is worse is the inept criminal was stuck in this position for more than four hours and only his moaning alerted staff that he was in the ceiling.

According to Marshall Security’s Tyron Powell, the man was arrested by La Lucia Mall security after stealing a pair of jeans from Ackermans. He was detained in a store room while mall staff and security waited for police to arrive.

“He was arrested at about 2pm. However, when police arrived they found the suspect was no longer in the room and had removed a ceiling board and climbed into the ceiling to escape.

“Later in the evening at about 9pm mall security heard noises coming from the ceiling in a passageway and found the suspect in the roof. He was stuck between the ceiling boards and a metal pipe. He was exhausted and out of breath and filthy from crawling around inside the ceiling,” Powell said.

The man was rescued and handed over to SAPS.
