Student stabbed and bitten in Durban North robbery

The latest incident is the ninth case of armed robbery since March at the Gardens.

A NURSING student who refused to give up her cellphone was stabbed then bitten by a group of armed men in yet another robbery at  the Japanese Gardens on Monday. Dheekasha Naidoo and three other nursing students were at the gardens when they were approached by four men who demanded their cellphones. The robbery occurred at about 2.45pm.

The 20-year-old refused to hand over her Blackberry and was stabbed in the shoulder and then bitten as one of the men pried the phone from her grasp. The latest incident is the ninth case of armed robbery since March at the Gardens, dubbed as a ‘pleasant park’ by the municipality.

Lt Raymond Deokaran, spokesman for the Durban North SAPS said police had stepped up patrols in the area but insisted more would be done.

“We have informed park security about the incidents and ask visitors to remain vigilant. We have stepped up patrols in the area and we are confident we will catch these criminals,” he said.

The stabbing was the latest in a series of crime that rocked the Durban North and uMhlanga areas. Starting with a million rand jewellery heist at La Lucia mall and ending with armed men making off with almost R400 000 in a daring cash heist at Pick ‘n Pay Hypermarket (Hyper By The Sea) on Sunday morning.
