Thieves remove tiles, rob Durban North restaurant

Thieves use unconventional method to rob local restaurant.

A GROUP of thieves scaled new heights to rob a restaurant of R5 000 on Adelaide Tambo Drive (formerly Kensington) last week. The men removed several tiles from the roof above the Bombay Blu restaurant, and entered the establishment from above. The men then climbed back up through the roof to escape.

Thieves used the same method to gain access to KFC on Swapo Road (Broadway) and made off with a flatscreen television a week prior to the Bombay Blu robbery.

Lt Raymond Deokaran, spokesman for the Durban North SAPS, has warned businesses to be aware of the unconventional method and urged businesses to install roof sensors so this type of theft may be avoided.

“It’s not a conventional method of robbery but there have been cases in the past where criminals have used this modus operandi. In the past the thieves have used the cover of darkness to make their way onto the roofs to avoid detection from pedestrians,” he explained.

“In February, two houses in Durban North and uMhlanga were robbed, and Cafe Barber, another business on Adelaide Tambo was also targeted by thieves removing roof tiles to gain access”

There have been no arrests and investigations are continuing added Deokaran.
