IPID takes over cop girlfriend’s murder investigations

The docket of the Metro Police officer who stands accused of killing his girlfriend has been handed over to the IPID.

THE police watchdog has taken over the investigation of a Metro Police officer who allegedly shot and killed his girlfriend, Rosemary Bell, on Tuesday, 19 August.

Greenwood Park SAPS spokesman, Lt Elvis Naidoo, said the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) had taken over the case.

The suspect appeared in court today, but Lt Naidoo said it is unclear if he has been given bail or remanded into custody.

“The suspect will only be bought back to the station late this afternoon. The docket has been handed to the IPID, who will be conducting all further investigations into the murder,” Lt Naidoo added.

Yesterday, police reported that the officer said the shot to the stomach that killed Rosemary Bell (32) was an accident.

“According to the Metro officer’s statement, Bell started playing with the gun, but when the officer tried to take the gun back from her it went off and shot her in the stomach,” said Lt Elvis Naidoo, spokesman for the Greenwood Park SAPS.

She was shot and died in her Terence Place home at about 10.30pm on Tuesday.

The IPID’s spokesman, Moses Dlamini could not be reached for comment.
