Greenwood Park’s fallen cops remembered

A somber mood once again hung over the Greenwood Park SAPS headquarters yesterday when those who had died in the line of duty were remembered.

A TOTAL of 17 policemen and women from the Greenwood Park Police station have died in the past ten years – three of them were killed in the line of duty. To honour those that had died their colleagues unveiled a Wall of Remembrance yesterday while the families that they left behind laid roses at the foot of the wall. Sons, daughters, mothers, fathers, brothers and sisters of the officers came forward.

A somber mood hung over the station as the wall was unveiled with the death of Captain Basil Naidoo still fresh on the minds of many. Naidoo was killed in March when he attended to a house robbery in progress in the Riverside Road area. At the time his death came as a massive shock to his colleagues. His shooter is still at large. Sergeant Bucksey Patel and Constable Satha Naidoo were also killed in the line of duty. Patel died in 2010 while Naidoo was killed two years before that.
Family of the deceased police officers as well as the Durban Crisis Centre team attended the packed event. Greenwood Park Station Commander Col Mbongeni Mngadi said the ceremony was the first of its kind. “This is a historic occasion, where for the first time we will commemorate our fallen heroes and show appreciation to the families for their ultimate sacrifice,” Mngadi said.
