ANCWL shows solidarity for global campaign

Bring Back Our Girls is an international campaign to bring home 276 Nigerian schoolgirls, kidnapped from their classroom in April by Islamic terror network Boko Haram

MEMBERS from the African National Congress Women’s League (ANCWL) showed their solidarity for the Bring Back Our Girls campaign with a protest march on Swapo Road on Saturday afternoon. More than 100 women sang songs and waved placards bearing their messages of support with many hoping their signs would bring greater attention to the plight of the abducted girls.

Bring Back Our Girls is an international campaign to bring home 276 Nigerian schoolgirls, kidnapped from their classroom in April by Islamic terror network Boko Haram. To date, protests have taken place in Nigeria, Paris, Sydney, New York, London and various parts of South Africa.

A social media campaign under the hashtag #Bringbackourgirls started trending in Nigeria just weeks after the abduction and has now been tweeted more than one million times.

Phezile Jale, chairperson of the ANCWL said the message was simple. “These four words are a message, and one that resonates with millions of people around the world. We are here to show that we unequivocally condemn Boko Haram’s horrendous kidnap. “We are also showing our solidarity and support for the families of the captured girls.

“As mothers, we feel the pain the parents are going through as they do not know where their children are. I’m glad for the support shown by the residents of Durban North. We all want the best for our children and we all want a safer Africa,” she said.

Jale pledged the ANCWL would continue supporting the global campaign and may organise more protests in the near future.
