A memorable Dusi family experience

Evered Hall family bag bronze in Dusi but say it was the best family experience ever.

THEY may have won a bronze medal in a time of 14:36, but for Josh, Mark and Ant Evered-Hall, the Unlimited Dusi was more than just a race. It was about the ultimate family experience.

The trio are the first crew spanning three generations to compete in the three-day race. For Dusi debutant, Josh the race was an eye opener.

“It was amazing, such an awesome experience and being able to paddle with my dad and granddad made the race even more special. They kept checking up on me and asking me if I was alright. I didn’t know what to expect when we started the race, but the camaraderie, the spirit, and the support was something I had never seen or felt before,” Josh said.

Ant, a veteran of 13 Dusi’s said as the race progressed the team felt more confident in their lines and paddling.

“I thoroughly enjoyed the race. It’s not every day you get to row the Dusi with your son and grandson. Just talking about it now and already the adrenaline is pumping. Josh did an amazing job on his first Dusi, Mark was incredible steersman at the helm. Our lines going into the rapids were perfect and I felt our training and homework really paid off,” Ant said.

For Mark the Dusi was about a dream come true.

“The race was never about winning or losing. It was about completing a dream and sharing in something special. From start to finish, the Dusi was fantastic. It was wonderful to see other paddlers recognise us and wish us all the best,” Mark said.

The Durban North trio all agreed the best feeling was crossing the finish line with their family cheering on in support.

“Our family was fantastic, the best team of seconds on the Dusi course. When we crossed the finish line, it was such a surreal experience. I would like to thank all our sponsors and all those who supported us before and after the race,” Mark said.
