‘Awol’ teachers’ salaries withheld

KZN Department of Education freezes the salaries of 388 teachers.

A total of 388 KZN teachers will be left without a salary because they are were “Away Without Official Leave” (AWOL), said the department.

The 2009 provincial cabinet engaged in a head count and employment verification exercise which was set to be complete in 2011. Due to the large amount of teachers, approximately 108 000, the project was extended beyond its time frame.

According to media reports, Nkoisnathi Sishi, KZN Head of Department said that they will wait till after the salaries are frozen to see what happens as there could be various reasons as to why teachers did not turn up for the verification exercise.
