Hitman arrested following Durban North shootout

One of the men involved in an attmepted hit on a taxi boss has been arrested.

A MAN has been arrested following the taxi related shootout on Monday night that rocked Durban North. More than 25 shots were fired in what is believed to be a hit on the chairman of the KwaDukuza Taxi Association, Sanele Zondi (36). Of the rounds fired, only one hit the car Zondi was traveling in, shattering his back window and exiting through the front window. The incident occurred at the intersection of Kenneth Kaunda (Northway) and Swapo (Broadway) Road.

The suspect was arrested later that night after a local security company believed he had been involved in a hijacking. Marshall Security’s Tyron Powell said they received reports of shots fired in the Durban North area and were looking for a white Toyota Fortuna that was involved in the hijacking.

“Initially we weren’t aware the men were involved in the alleged hit. We then received a report the vehicle was abandoned on the corner of Blackburn Road and North Coast Road and that suspects had fled.

“The vehicle was stopped outside the Red Hill Post Office and two suspects were exiting the vehicle, the suspects began to flee on foot, our members gave chase and managed to tackle one of the suspects and arrested him,” Powell said.

He was found in possession of five live .38 Special rounds in his possession. The second suspect is still at large and managed to escape on foot.

“Ownership of the vehicle was checked and found to be registered to a person in Harding. He was contacted but confirmed that his vehicle was still with him. On checking the vehicle’s VIN it was established that the number plates and license disk had been cloned. Further investigation established that the vehicle had been stolen on Saturday from North Beach,” Powell said.

Zondi escaped any serious injury. A case of attempted murder and malicious damage to property has been opened at the Durban North police station.
