MORE than 1 500 pupils from around KwaZulu-Natal entered the prestigious Bruce Piper Monologue Competition, run by the Speech and Drama Association of South Africa, with 12 talented finalists battling it out last weekend to win the coveted award plus a year’s worth of acting lessons at UKZN.

Grade 11 Northlands Girls’ High School (NGHS) dramatic arts pupil, Sibahle Sibbya, walked away with the coveted award with her powerful performance of Elana Gartner’s Because of Beth.

The aspiring actress was delighted to win and said that representing her school and being the third NGHS pupil to win the award was an absolute honour.

Girls, boys and co-ed high schools, both private and public, entered the competition and the NGHS Dramatic Arts Department were delighted that out of the 1 600 entries an impressive four finalists were all from NGHS.

Actress and NGHS Old Girl, Minnie Dlamini, won the award in 2008 and 2009 and up-coming media personality Sholene Ramdass, also an NGHS Old Girl, won the award in 2010.

Sibahle wants to study drama after her finals next year, but for now is concentrating on her end of year exams and her new role as an executive leader at the school.
