21 drunk drivers arrested

Drunk drivers warned after roadblock along M4/M41 yields a number of arrests.

WITH the festive season just two months away, the Durban North SAPS has said it will not tolerate drunk driving or drinking in public. Last week 18 people were arrested for drunk driving, during a roadblock along the M4/m41 split, while a further three motorists was nabbed on Marine Drive.

Lt Raymond Deokaran, spokesman for the Durban North Police Station, said roadblocks would be a common occurence to send out a clear message that drunk driving would not be tolerated. “Research has shown that high police visibility can reduce drunk driving fatalities. We want to remind everyone that getting behind the wheel drunk is a terrible idea. Unfortunately, not only does drinking impair your ability to operate a vehicle safely, it also impairs your judgment and good sense about whether you can, or should drive,” he said.

Deokaran added if you have a doubt about your safety, you should not get behind the wheel. “If you do decide to drive, you will be arrested, no excuses. There is a zero tolerance policy for drunk driving. As we get closer to the festive season, there will be more roadblocks,” he said. “It is our responsibility to ensure that our roads are safe and the public respects the law.”
