Empowering women through technology

Rotary Club of Durban North literacy project progressess.

AT the beginning of this year, Durban North resident, Kantha Dorasamy, knew very little about computers. But after enrolling in the Rotary Club of Durban North’s computer skills programme at the North Crest Primary School Centre of Excellence, Kantha has learned how to be proficient using various different computer programs.

“My husband runs a plumbing business and with the literacy course, I’ve been able to draw up invoices and quotations. This course has helped empower me in a way I never thought possible,” she said. This is just one of many success stories for the project which has helped people with English, adult literacy and computer skills.

Rotary Club of Durban North president, Peter Coutts, said the programme has had a further boost by the Victor Daitz Foundation and the Council of Kwazulu-Natal Jewry, which donated new computer equipment earlier this year. “We often had problems with the older computers, in terms of speed and outdated programs. However, since the generous donation, we are able to use new Microsoft programs.

“It’s wonderful to see people learning new life skills,” he said.

Another student who is revelling in her new found skills is Thola Mthethwa, who said the course has helped her learn a lot.

“I’ve never used a computer before, but the teachers are very understanding and patient. I’ve been able to do things I never could before” Mthethwa said.

The programme is staffed by volunteers from the Durban North Rotary Club as well as members of the Durban North community. For more information on the Adult literacy programme contact the school on 031 564 3533 or call Cathy Stevens on 0783383131.
