You’re never too old

Age has no barrier, just ask veteran runner Dave Flood.

FOR most runners, the news that you’d never be able to run again, would be devastating. However, when doctors told Durban North resident and veteran runner, Dave Flood, he’d never be able to run again, he decided to pursue the best option, and began speed walking.

“A few years ago I had started to suffer with severe back problems, as it turned out, I had to have a disc replaced. The doctors said I wouldn’t be able to run but that I could walk.

”Naturally the news was dissapointing but I started training in speed walking with the late Norman Janet,” he said.

The 65-year-old is a veteran of 16 Comrades Marathons and currently holds two KZN records in the 20km and 5 000m.

“I remember walking the Comrades in 2010, it was incredibly hard but I managed a bronze medal in a time of 10h10. It was a really proud moment for me, it was just incredible. I’ve also entered next year’s Comrades after a three-year absence,” he said.

What is remarkable about Flood is not only did he win a number of local races using speed walking, but he has now started running again.

“I hope my story serves as an inspiration, that age has no barrier,” he said.
