Section of Kenville Road collapses yet again

Members of the eThekwini Municipality have also been on-site to survey the new damage to the residential road that was recently reinstated and repaired.

JUST weeks after the repair and reinstatement of a section of Kenville Road that had collapsed, residents are facing yet another road closure as the repaired section has collapsed once again.

The road, which began collapsing in March 2022, was impacted by heavy rains, as well as heavy-duty vehicles leading to the condition of the road deteriorating to a point where both lanes of the residential road were impacted.

In the repair and reinstatement of the road, the property bordering the collapsed section of the road also had to build its retaining wall, and the section between the failed roadway and the wall had to be backfilled and compacted to road level.

Residents were also left without water following the collapse.

Kenville and Sea Cow Lake Residents’ and Ratepayers’ Association chairperson Anil Beekrum expressed his concern for the structural integrity of the road surface.

“There were some suggestions that a water pipe caused the collapse, but at this stage, we cannot say. The collapse, however, is worse than the last time, and with the rainy season upon us, we could be looking at more of the road collapsing. We are facing yet another lengthy closure of the road and essentially are back to square one.

“Residents of Sea Cow Lake and Kenville areas have been inconvenienced for the last few years with the project to build the Kenville Road bridge and the realignment of Sea Cow Lake Road. Now, we face another setback with this collapse as school transport and residents use this road on a regular basis,” he said.

Beekrum said that at this stage, there is no timeframe given as to when repairs will be done.

He did, however, say that senior engineers and members of the eThekwini Municipality have also been on-site to survey the damage.
