Aweh! Find out what’s happening in Durban

Durbanites are invited to various activities and shows this weekend and the week ahead. This is your directory of what will be happening in Durban.

IT’S the school holidays, and there is no shortage of things to do as a family, from the popular Inchanga Choo Choo, music concerts and a fundraiser for our four-legged friends to various markets.

A trip along the valley

Take a trip behind an 85-year-old Steam Engine and meander along the Valley of 1000 Hills on September 28 and 29. On Saturday, September 28, the Steam Train shorty rides will cost R80 for a 25-minute trip from 08:00 until 16:00. On Sunday, the trains will run at 09:00, 11:00, 13:30 and 15:30. This roughly 75-minute trip departs from Inchanga Railway Station, meandering along the rolling hills of KZN, through one of the oldest operating tunnels in South Africa, with the sights of the Valley of 1000 Hills in the distance, before turning around at Botha’s Hill for the return to Inchanga.

Ensure you bring cash or you can use Zapper as there are no card facilities or ATMs. Arrive half an hour prior to departure to collect your tickets. For more information and bookings, visit www.umgenisteamrailway.com. The Umgeni Steam Railway is a proud member of, and supported by, the 1000 Hills Community Tourism Organisation.

Enjoy a day of festivities

Join a fun-filled day of K-pop and K-drama festivities at K-Fest Spring Edition hosted by Radio Saranghae, on Saturday, September 28, from 11:00 to 16:00 at Greenwood Park Community Hall. The theme for the day is ‘Spring in full bloom’. Tickets start from R85 with goodie-bag options. There will be food and merchandise vendors selling delicious Korean-inspired food and official K-pop merchandise with K-drama trinkets to find, exciting games and prizes to be won. There is safe, secure parking.

Music galore

The City of Durban is proud to host the Bremer Kantorei St Stephani (BKST) choir for a week-long visit. The choir is conducted by Tim Guenther, an organist and choir director based in Bremen. BKST will be performing in Durban under the auspices of the Bremen-Durban Sister Cities partnership. The exchange between the two cities has grown over the past decade. This is essentially a musical partnership that was initiated by Tim Guenther and Melvin Peters, a jazz pianist and church organist based in Durban.

The second concert takes place on Thursday, September 26, at the Playhouse at 19:00. This event is a collaboration with the Durban Symphonic Choir as well as the KwaZulu-Natal Philharmonic Orchestra. The main work on the programme is Antonin Dvorak’s Mass in D for choir and orchestra as well as the Sixth Symphony by the same composer. Tim Guenther will conduct the orchestra and combined choir.

Tickets cost R160 (Quicket). Pensioners pay R140 while children are R100 each. Contact Reena Makan at the Playhouse.
