Durban North College showcase schoolboy rugby with 7s festival

This year’s format saw fixtures in the U15 and U18 age categories.

THERE was plenty of action this weekend as schoolboy rugby was showcased at the annual Durban North College (DNC) 7s Festival.

The Durban North school, which hosted the event, invited schools from around Durban, including Kloof High School and Clifton College.

This year’s format saw fixtures in the U15 and U18 age categories with Suid Natal winning the U15 category and Kloof High School winning the U18 category.

“It was all in a bid to promote the game of sevens rugby,” explained first-team coach of Durban North College Andile Ndlela.

“We were so pleased with the calibre of rugby on display but also the exposure it offered to our teams. On a personal note, DNC have had better tournaments, but I will say we were solid with our set pieces and were intentional with the ball. Our line-outs were solid, and we tried to execute our game plans through each phase of the game. There were lessons learned and one of them was the importance of never switching off.

“This was our third 7s festival this year, and we’ve made a final and placed second in the previous two. The U18 team came away with a solitary win at the tournament, but I feel it was a learning curve for the players. These tournaments are valuable for the growth in players, and it helps showcase schoolboy rugby to new audiences. We are so grateful to the teams that participated, and we hope for more success in the years to come,” he said.

Ndlela also praised the support of the crowd and visitors who cheered on their schools on the day.
