Democratic Alliance retains Wards 35 and 36

Both wards have been a DA stronghold for many years, and this reflected in the polls as the party won comfortably.

BRADLEY Singh and Heinz de Boer of the Democratic Alliance (DA) have been voted in as councillors for Ward 35 and 36 respectively following Wednesday’s by-elections.

Ward 35 includes La Lucia, Virginia, uMhlanga and Somerset Park while Ward 36 includes Durban North, Umgeni Park and Park Hill.

De Boer won with 92% of the vote while Singh accounted for 91% of the vote in what was a landslide victory.

Speaking on his victory, Singh thanked the voters for their show of faith in him and the party.

Bradley Singh, the newly elected ward councillor for Ward 35.

“I’d like to thank the community of Ward 35 who voted for the DA and for placing their trust in me. There are service delivery issues to which I plan on finding long-term solutions. I look forward to engaging with residents and civil associations,” he said.

Singh will start with community engagement sessions this Saturday, commencing at Durbanview Park in uMhlanga, on Saturday from 08:00 to 10:00. Details will be posted on the relevant WhatsApp groups,” he said.

De Boer echoed these comments on Thursday.

“Yesterday’s by-elections were democracy in action. I’m here as a representative and a mouthpiece for the people of Ward 36. I stand firmly behind the people who elected me. I will ensure their service delivery complaints are heard. There are a number of projects I have in mind, including the potential space for Umgeni Park and surrounds to have their own reservoir, particularly in light of the water-supply crisis in North Durban,” he said.

The by-elections came months after former councillor Shontel de Boer (Ward 36) was sworn into the KZN Provincial Legislature while Nicole Bollman (Ward 35) was sworn in as a member of parliament.
