Riverside men’s team net outdoor league

Riverside men's hockey team win successive outdoor league titles.

IN recent years, Riverside Hockey Club, has grown exponentially in talent. Regarded as one of the powerhouses of provincial hockey, the team recently secured the KZN hockey association men’s outdoor league. It’s all down to the camaraderie, spirit, and hard work of players and coaching staff on and off the field. That’s according to captain of the team, Mike Botha.

The 31-year-old lauded his team’s performances which has now seen them bag successive KZN league honours. “I’m absolutely thrilled. We’ve played against some formidable clubs with top provincial and SA players, so we are brimming with pride over the results!” he said.

A former Northlands Primary School pupil, Botha was also the top scorer in the KZN league, a record he has held for 10 years. “There’s a strong support structure within the team and a lot of unselfish play, which has allowed me to be in the right place at the right time,” said a beaming Botha.

Botha added the team has also benefited from the Protea quartet, of Tim Drummond, the Paton brothers, Wade and Taine and SA goalkeeper, Gowan Jones. “There experience has been invaluable. Their composure and advice during the game certainly added to the team’s attacking and defensive prowess,” he said.
