Obstacle course event in La Lucia crowns SA champs

Organisers of the event Trish and Claude Eksteen said the event was well-attended.

THE recent Viking SA Obstacle Course Racing (OCR) Championships held over the weekend was a resounding success.

That’s according to organisers and Glen Anil couple Trish and Claude Eksteen, who run Adventure Obstacle Training at Redwood College in La Lucia.

Various national champs were crowned across several age groups in the 3km and 100m OCR course.

In the SA Elite 3km event, local residents Lisha Sookan (Mount Edgecombe) and Brandon Hulley (Glen Anil) were crowned champions while the 100m Elite event saw Warren Whitson (Glenashley) and Dominique De Oliveira (Cape Town) taking the titles.

The event was the first of its kind in South Africa in those two disciplines and was sanctioned by the Obstacle Sports Federation Africa (OCFSA).

“The feedback from both the public and participants was incredibly positive,” explained Trish. “I think everything went well, and the level of competition was high. The competitors were also complimentary about the variety of obstacles. It was also special because we crowned new SA champs. I also want to congratulate Lisa, Brandon, Warren and Dominique for their performances at the champs.”

Trish added that she remained confident the event will be a permanent fixture going forward.

“We are passionate about growing the sport, and we hope for even bigger success next year. In KZN, we have our training facility and two others in PMB and Winston Park, and I feel we have what it takes to keep moving the sport forward,” she said.
