Apart from the beautiful blooms, which are the stars of the show, vendors and orchid growers from all over the province will showcase and demonstrate nearly everything one needs to know about orchids.

Chairperson of the Natal Orchid Society, Nico Glintenkamp, said they are expecting yet another fantastic fair filled with the most beautiful orchids and exotic plants, which takes place at 118 Fairway, Durban North, on Saturday, August 3.

“The show sports gorgeous displays every year, including a massive one done by the society which everyone looks forward to. Even if you don’t grow orchids, you will be amazed at what the fair has to offer,” he said.

There will be plant sales, talks and potting demonstrations taking place at 11:00 and 13:00: orchids, staghorns, bromeliads, succulents, palm trees, and Tillandsias and Nepenthes, just to name a few, will be on display and for sale.

“Many people receive orchids as gifts – you know the ones from Woolworths or Checkers – but they don’t know how to repot them. If you’d like to know, come to the show where experienced orchid lovers will provide the advice and guidance you need,” he added.

Some of the vendors include Plantae, Kinsley Gardens, Mighty Fine Orchids, God’s Green Gifts and Rare and Air.

Glintenkamp said the Natal Orchid Society was also looking to grow its membership and welcomes anyone interested to sign up at the fair. Meetings are held once a month on Margaret Maydon Drive.

The fair coincides with the soft opening of the new restaurant, 118 on Fairway.

The restaurant will open for breakfast and lunch, initially serving light meals, including some with a Thai twist, and will be the place to enjoy refreshments and lunch on the day of the show.

“Come and make an outing of it. Relax, enjoy the show and go home with some beautiful blooms. There’s plenty of parking outside, and most vendors take cash or card,” he said.

Entry fee is R25 for adults. Children under 12 enter for free. The fair takes place from 09:00 to 16:00.
