Durban North boxing event packs a punch

The event, which takes place this Saturday, July 27, will feature 12 bouts in the hopes of promoting boxing among the youth.

THE Knuckle Game Boxing Academy in Durban North will host its second fight night of the year at Crusaders Sports Club on Saturday, July 27.

The owner of the academy and coach, Trevor Wolmarans, said the event was about promoting the sport of boxing and giving young fighters a chance to box in front of a crowd.

Wolmarans added that the event will feature 12 bouts across various age categories.

“For the past few years, we’ve been hosting fight nights promoting boxing in the Durban North area, and we’ve certainly seen a growth in the number of boxing gyms, competitors and spectators. So there is an appetite across Durban. We are proud in that we are setting a benchmark where we’ve gone from 300 people to 2 000 people at a fight night. The coolest thing is everyone gets involved and supports each other, especially in this area,” he said.

Wolmarans added that he hopes the event would give young boxers a taste of fighting live in front of an audience.

“I hope this fight night and events to come will be a stepping stone for some of the young boxers on the cards. Many may see boxing as a professional career path, so this would be one way of keeping that dream alive and also introducing amateur boxing to a whole new audience. With a live audience, there is a big atmosphere, and this is also a learning curve for them to handle pressure,” he said.
