Expert insights for moisturised skin in winter

Fundamentals Skincare's Natasha Davel shares tips on how to look after your skin, no matter what type, this winter when the weather is more severe and drier.

AS we transition into winter and skin concerns begin to rise, Natasha Davel from Fundamentals Skincare shares some good practices for skincare in winter. Davel says if you don’t have a well-working routine, now is the time to create one. While some areas of the body are brimming with oil glands, others may require extra care.

“To establish a first line of defence against dryness and irritation, you want to start using a gentle cleanser and end with a heavier moisturiser.

“Consider the ideas below to take your winter skincare practices to the next level:

Oil cleanser

Oil cleansing is one of the best ways to break down product build-up, impurities and unnoticeable grime, all while balancing out the skin’s natural lipids. Most oil cleansers double as a moisturiser and keep the skin nourished for extended periods of time.

Gel cleanser

If you have an oily or combination skin type, you may want to stay away from the oil cleansers. Opt for a gentler and more exfoliating cleanser. Look for ingredients like mandelic acid, which is a type of gentle alpha hydroxy acid (AHA). It may help reduce acne, fine lines and wrinkles and improve the appearance of uneven skin. As a person ages, skin renewal slows down, causing the skin to lose elasticity, discolour and develop fine lines and wrinkles. Lactic acid is also a hero ingredient that helps smooth and soften skin texture. Products containing this exfoliating ingredient can be suitable for oily, combination skin types because it is one of the gentlest alpha-hydroxy acids, and it offers hydrating benefits, as well.

Cream cleanser

Cream cleansers are a go-to for winter skincare routines because they generally create a soft texture in your skin and calm and hydrate it. Cream cleansers gently cleanse using natural oils and emulsifiers to soothe, and they’re best for those with sensitive and dry skin.

“The first step really is locking down the perfect cleanser for the winter season. By choosing the correct one for your specific skin type, you will help clean and exfoliate your skin, removing excess and shedding skin while also protecting your skin barrier, making it stronger to withstand the intense weather conditions,” added Davel.

Fundamentals Skincare has brought out a new 5% jojoba oil cream cleanser and its 5% lactic acid + 5% mandelic acid gel cleanser, which should boost your skincare this winter.

Once you have cleansers down, the next step is to moisturise. This applies to both face and body. Simply put, it’s the last step you do in any routine. Finding a good moisturiser that will provide a substantial amount of moisture support, while simultaneously treating the skin, can make a difference in skin health and functionality. Look for peptides, niacinamide and hyaluronic acid to help strengthen and perk up the collagen in your skin.
