Work to replace valves on Northern Aqueduct completed

To-date, the City has installed more than 70 air valves as part of replacement programme to improve efficiency of water flow.

TECHNICAL teams from the City’s Water and Sanitation Unit have completed work to install new air valves on a section of the Northern Aqueduct Pipeline.

Earlier this week the City announced the pipeline would be shutdown in efforts to restore water supply to areas that have been experiencing prolonged water outages.

City manager, Musa Mbhele confirmed that the municipality had to replace defective air valves along the aqueduct with a further six requiring special modifications.

Thereafter, charging of the pipeline to fill up reservoirs will commence. This will be done while the outlets remain closed.

“To-date, the City has installed more than 70 air valves as part of replacement programme to improve efficiency of water flow and to increase pressure within the Northern Aqueduct. This has cost approximately R7 million,” the City said in a statement.

“The City remains committed to improving water supply to affected communities and various interventions will continue to be explored as we are not out of the woods yet. Other interventions include the use of technology to detect leaks, with this process already underway as well as the installation of pressure logging equipment,” the City said in a statement.
