Planned shutdown of aqueduct to affect uMhlanga, Durban North and other areas

The shutdown is part of ongoing work on the Northern Aqueduct to ensure increased water flow.

THE eThekwini Municipality said it plans to shut down the Northern Aqueduct pipeline as part of its efforts to restore water supply to areas that have been experiencing prolonged water outages.

Several areas north of Durban have had no or intermittent water supply for the past few months, which has led to growing frustration.

Earlier this week, City manager Musa Mbhele confirmed that the municipality had to replace 54 defective air valves along the aqueduct with a further six requiring special modifications.

“The shutdown of this pipeline, which carries water from Durban Heights Treatment Works to the areas in the north, will result in interruption of water supply while work is being undertaken. This is part of ongoing work that the municipality has undertaken on the Northern Aqueduct to ensure the efficiency of water flow and to increase pressure within the pipeline. This work is expected to be [started on Tuesday, February 20 at 17:00 and] completed on Wednesday, February 21 at 17:00,” the statement read.

The City said that reservoirs will be open during peak periods in the morning and afternoon on Wednesday, February 21, however, water supply will depend on consumption patterns.
