Sea Cow Lake warehouse still ablaze

Due to the building being a 'fire load', extinguishing the fire is a prolonged process.

FIREFIGHTERS are still hard at work trying to extinguish the fiery blaze at a warehouse in Sea Cow Lake which started yesterday.

Divisional commander for the north, Bruce de Gier, said the challenge right now is that the building is a warehouse carrying masses of merchandise, something firefighters call a ‘fire load.’

“Everything that was in the warehouse has been burnt so nothing can burn any further. The fire is under control, but because this warehouse is a fire load, extinguishing the blaze has been prolonged,” he told Northglen News.

The fire started at about 15:00 yesterday (Monday). People were safely evacuated, and firefighters have been at work since then.

Emer-G-Med Paramedics spokesperson Kyle van Reenen said cars parked in one of the units had also burnt.

“Several motor vehicles, which were parked in one of the units, have been completely destroyed,” he said.

The cause of the fire is still unknown at this stage.
