Water supply shutdown planned for north Durban

The shutdown will allow for the removal of a steel plate that was previously installed on Aqueduct 2 to isolate the flow of water while repairs are in progress.

SOME parts of Durban will experience a reduction in pressure and water interruptions tomorrow (Tuesday) as the Durban Heights Water Treatment Works is undergoing an 18-hour shutdown, scheduled to end at about 20:00 at night.

The shutdown will also include the installation of a double isolation facility to enable the contractor undertaking the repairs to continue working on the aqueduct in preparation for its recommissioning in December this year.

By undertaking this maintenance shutdown now, uMngeni-uThukela aims to minimise the possibility of bulk water interruptions ahead of the start of the busy festive season. This exercise forms part of uMngeni-uThukela’s efforts to repair and restore infrastructure that was damaged during the floods in April 2022.

uMngeni-uThukela Water is working closely with the eThekwini Municipality’s Water and Sanitation Department to minimise the impacts of the shutdown. Both organisations will constantly monitor water levels at reservoirs during the shutdown so they do not dip below the set points.

To minimise this impact, we urge the public to use water sparingly and delay activities that consume additional water, such as the washing of cars, watering gardens or filling up swimming pools during this time.

“uMngeni-uThukela Water apologises for the inconvenience but at the same assures its stakeholders and the public that the maintenance work is aimed at ensuring an uninterrupted water supply during the upcoming festive period,” said uMngeni-uThukela spokesperson Siyabonga Maphumulo.
