Traditions and rituals performed on Diwali Day
Diwali, also known as Deepavali, is a significant Hindu festival celebrated with great enthusiasm. It symbolises the triumph of light over darkness and good over evil.
DIWALI is associated with several legends, the most common being the return of Lord Rama after defeating Ravana.

According to Nad Pillay, chairperson of the the Greenwood Park Shree Ranganathar Temple, Diwali is a time for family gatherings and lighting lamps and fireworks which signify the removal of ignorance and the spread of knowledge.
“Important Diwali rituals and traditions in Hindu homes include cleaning and decorating the house to welcome the goddess of wealth, Lakshmi. A prayer is performed for Lakshmi to bestow wealth and prosperity upon the family and in the home,” he said.
“Families also light diyas (oil lamps) to symbolise the inner light that protects them from spiritual darkness. Families exchange gifts and sweets and visit temples to seek blessings for prosperity and well-being,” added Pillay.
He said that fireworks are also lit to drive away evil spirits. These traditions foster unity, prosperity and spiritual growth.
“Another important Diwali tradition in Hindu homes is the ritual of taking an oil bath. This is typically done on the morning of Diwali. It involves applying oil on the body and then taking a bath to cleanse and purify oneself. This ritual signifies the removal of impurities and the renewal of the body and soul,” said Pillay.
