Umhlanga Hindu Society hopes Diwali hampers will bring light

The society is embarking on a One Million Rand Diwali Hamper Drive for the less fortunate.

DIWALI, also known as the Festival of Lights, is one of the most significant cultural celebrations for the Hindu community.

The celebration symbolises the victory of light over darkness and the triumph of good over evil and is a time when families come together, exchange gifts and engage in acts of charity and kindness.

With this in mind, the Umhlanga Hindu Society (UHS) is embarking on a One Million Rand Diwali Hamper Drive for the less fortunate.

Chairman of the UHS Danny Govender said the aim of this year’s drive is to distribute 2 500 Diwali hampers.

“We believe that everyone, regardless of their economic circumstances, should have the opportunity to experience the joy and warmth of this festive occasion. For us, this initiative aims to spread joy and celebrate the spirit of Diwali with underprivileged individuals and needy families. Our goal is to distribute 2 500 Diwali hampers, each priced at R400 per hamper pack, which will include essential food items, sweets and other traditional items associated with Diwali. Through this drive, we hope to foster a sense of togetherness and compassion within our community,” Govender said.

The UHS has also appealed to the north Durban community to support the drive in any way they can.

“We have already begun collecting hampers, but we need the support of the community. If residents would like to contribute, they can donate R400, and we will then put together the hampers. With the generous support of the community, we feel we will continue to ignite the Diwali light of sharing and caring, making a positive impact on the lives of many individuals and families, bringing them happiness and joy,” he said.
