As first team coach and Director of Rugby at Northwood School Jeremy McLaren has played an integral role in moulding and mentoring young talent.

What is your earliest Rugby World Cup memory?

“It would be the 1995 Rugby World Cup in South Africa. I think for most South Africans that memory sticks out especially as we lifted the Webb Ellis Trophy. I also had the opportunity to watch one of the World Cup matches between Japan and New Zealand. Back then the Cherry Blossoms were still finding their feet and they lost 145-17.”

What is you favourity Rugby World Cup memory?

“I could say the years in which we’ve won, 1995, 2007, and 2019. Actually for the 2019 World Cup in Japan I was working on my level 3 qualifications at the high performance centre where the Blitzboks were training. So I got to watch the final with other rugby players.”

Who do you think is going to win this year?

“I’d say there are a few favourites. But I do back our boys to lift the trophy. They have manpower to win. The only part of our game that worries me is not having a decent goal kicker.”

Where is the best spot to watch a Springbok game?

“Of course it would be at any one of our local stadiums if they were playing at them. The vibe though is special at Boktown. For me I prefer with my or family and friends around a braai.”

What is the best snack to eat when watching a Springbok game?

“Anything on the braai. And of course the traditional snacks, biltong, dry wors and nuts and a beer. It may come down to preference even. Snacks though are an important part of any match day.”
