Mackenzie and Hockly bag medals at ICF Marathon World Champs

With one gold, one silver and two bronze medals, the South African team ended in a solid seventh overall on the medal table.

UMHLANGA’S Christie Mackenzie and Mount Moreland resident Saskia Hockly won a silver and a bronze in their respective races at this year’s International Canoe Federation (ICF) Canoe Marathon World Championships in Vejen, Denmark.

The duo, who were part of a South African team, helped the South African team end the championships with four medals.

With one gold, one silver and two bronze medals, the South African team ended in a solid seventh overall on the medal table.

Georgia Singe and Holly Smith’s victory in the Junior K2 was the highlight of the week for South Africa, while Andy Birkett (silver, Men’s K1), Christie Mackenzie (bronze, Women’s K1) and Saskia Hockly (bronze, Women’s U23) completed the medal count.

Mackenzie traded in her U23 bronze medal from 12 months ago in Portugal for a senior medal of the same colour when she claimed a solid third place in the elite women’s race.
