North Durban residents step up for SPCA sleepover

Three residents will be braving the kennels overnight at the Durban & Coast SPCA premises to give back to animals in need.

THREE local residents are hoping to raise as much as they can at this year’s SPCA Sleepover.

Tracy-Lee Sydney (Durban North), Senta Seele (Sunningdale) and Tilanie Grote (Durban North) will all be braving the kennels overnight at the Durban & Coast SPCA premises to give back to animals in need.

To be bailed out, the trio will need to raise a minimum of R1 000 each (which is also the adoption fee for a dog at the SPCA) through their social media platforms and their GivenGain pages.

For Tracy-Lee, this year was about celebrating a milestone birthday by giving back.

“I celebrate my 50th birthday this year, and I decided to show my support for the SPCA. Last year, I was one of those bailing my friends out of their kennels, but this year, I want to be a bigger part of the fundraising journey. The SPCA does such a fantastic job at helping homeless animals find their forever homes. I’m very much a fur-baby lover, and my goal for the evening is to raise as much as I can so I can relieve the SPCA from the pressures they are under,” she said.

Expressing similar sentiments, Senta explained that their support for the Durban & Coast SPCA started with KZN Women In Business (KZNWIB).

“When I was chairlady of the KZNWIB, the SPCA was our charity of choice. I formed an incredibly close connection with the staff here, and animals are something close to my heart. I spent a night in the kennels last year, and you do get to experience to an extent what the animals go through. We just want to do our part for the animals,” she said.

For Tilanie, the message from Senta holds true.

“I’m a big dog lover, and I believe if you are in a position to, you have to support animal rescue and care organisations like the SPCA. I know I will do anything I can on the evening to raise as much as possible. I was also a part of last year’s sleepover, and the atmosphere was great. Seeing people trying to raise funds through their social media for a great cause is incredibly heartwarming,” she said.

Important to note

The SPCA Sleepover takes place on Saturday, August 26, and there will also be a market on the same evening. Entrance to this will be R10 at the door, and the market will run from 14:00 until 18:00. The SPCA’s book room, charity shop and café will also be open on the evening.
