GALLERY: Hundreds tackle Greenwood Park clean-up

The purpose of the event was for the community to get to know each other better, to beautify and clean up the area and to fundraise for Greenwood Park Primary School.

IT was community involvement and teamwork at its best in Greenwood Park on Saturday as more than 300 people joined the clean-up in the area.

“This has been the biggest community clean-up we have seen, and we are delighted that so many of our residents came out in support of the school’s initiative. There were teams stationed throughout the area who started the clean-up at various points and eventually worked their way to the school grounds. While most of the cleaning took place along the main roads, it was inspiring to see that even the tiniest lanes cleaned up their verges and pathways,” said one of the organisers, Farrah Shaik.

She said it was amazing to see the community come together; even the little ones contributed to the clean-up by cleaning up inside the school property and planting a garden.

“Once the tidying up was done, the school hosted a lifestyle market and soccer tournament. Funds raised from the market, as well as the tournament, will go towards the upgrade of the school hall and the ablution facilities,” she added.

Other than community members, eThekwini Cleansing Solid Waste, eThekwini Parks and Gardens and various non-profit organisations also came on board to get the area spick and span.

Dream Gardens Durban also sponsored a community garden at the entrance of Mimosa Road.

“Once again, residents, businesses and Parks and Gardens got involved with the garden by sponsoring flowers to plant,” said Shaik.

“The event was such a success, and the response from stakeholders and residents was so positive that we’re thinking about hosting one every quarter or at least twice a year,” she said.
