Murals brighten Durban North bus stops

The project involves The Heart of Durban North, Enviro Fixers Durban North and the Durban North Conservancy.

TWO bus stops in the Broadway precinct have been completely transformed by stunning murals painted by Giffy Duminy.

It is all part of a project involving The Heart of Durban North, Enviro Fixers Durban North and the Durban North Conservancy.

The Heart of Durban North, a collective involving local businesses, spearheaded by Kensington SuperSPAR, has already seen various projects to uplift both the Swapo Road (Broadway) and Adelaide Tambo Drive (Kensington) precinct.

Initially, several bus stops in the precinct and surrounds were in a state of disrepair.

The project started when a team of volunteers gave the bus stops a new lick of paint and scraped off graffiti tags, while also removing illegal adverts pasted on the panels of the bus stops.

Both bus stops are situated on either side of Adelaide Tambo Drive (Kensington Drive).

Enviro Fixers member Helen Koch said the feedback from the community was encouraging.

“People are stopping to take photos and just admire the artwork, which is just lovely. For so many years, we tried to get the bus stops either replaced or refurbished, but we were unsuccessful. Now, to see them transformed, first by our own member, Ellysa Entwistle, and her team, and then by Giffy. His work is absolutely beautiful. We’ve collaborated with him on various projects, and his work always amazes us.

“The second bus stop on Adelaide Tambo Drive may look finished, but Giffy wants to still complete some shading and touch-ups before we reveal that. There are also plans in place to paint two others, making it four bus stops in total, later this year,” she said.
Two murals on two other bus stops are expected to be completed later this year.
