The open mornings, which occur once a month, are a way to raise awareness and celebrate the diversity of the 76-hectare reserve.

THE North Durban Honorary Officers will host their next open morning on Saturday, July 15 at the Beachwood Mangroves Nature Reserve.

According to honorary officer Brian High, the day, which occurs once a month, is a way to raise awareness and celebrate the diversity of the 76-hectare reserve.

Gates open from 08:00 until 13:00 and entrance is free.

“The North Durban Honorary Officers will take visitors on a guided walk, or those visiting can do a self-walk through the reserve. The last guided walk through the reserve leaves at 11:30. We also have plants for the garden enthusiasts which we’ve grown at our own nursery,” he said.

“Our educational centre will also be open to visitors, and of course, our guided walks are a great way to learn about the 76-hectare reserve. Indigenous plants from our nursery will be on sale. I encourage visitors to come to spend the morning in this amazing piece of nature right on your doorstep here in Durban. Come see what this little gem we have in Durban has to show you,” he said.

The monthly Clean Blue Lagoon beach clean-ups also coincide with the open mornings and take place on Saturday, July 15 from 08:00 to 11:00.

According to the organiser of the clean-up, Denise Mc Creadie, bags will be provided.

“You will also need gloves, a hat, water, sunscreen, and most importantly, all your family and friends. Everyone is always welcome,” she said.
