Effingham family locked in a room in armed robbery

The suspects also made off with the homeowner’s vehicle in the robbery.

AN EFFINGHAM family were held up at gunpoint before being locked in a room in an armed home invasion in Effingham on Sunday evening.

The incident occurred just after 20:30.

According to Sanveer Sooklall, spokesperson for Swift Private Security, the incident unfolded on Bhoola Road.

“According to a resident’s account, upon returning home, they were confronted by three armed suspects. The suspects held the family at gunpoint and forcibly entered the house. Once inside, the suspects searched the house, demanding their valuables. The suspects then locked the victims inside a room. Fortunately, the family managed to attract the attention of their neighbours who came to their aid,” he said.

Sooklall added that while the family weren’t assaulted by the suspects, they were traumatised.

The suspects also made off with the homeowner’s Isuzu double-cab bakkie.

“The vehicle was found abandoned on Chris Hani Road (North Coast Road) the next morning,” he said.
