Security company warns of hugging tactic used in robberies across city

The suspects often operate as a team and pretend to be your friend by acting boisterously and hugging you while searching for your valuables to pickpocket.

A SERIES of opportunistic mugging tactics are being used against patrons at fast-food outlets and service stations across North Durban and the city.

The modus operandi for the muggings sees suspects often operating as a team and pretending to be your friend by acting boisterously and hugging you while searching for your valuables to pickpocket.

According to Blue Security’s regional director, Clive Samuels, they have observed a new trend spreading through several areas across the city over recent weeks.

“The opportunistic criminals operate at relatively popular and busy garage convenience stores and fast-food outlets where people just want to buy convenience items without delay and don’t pay attention to people around them,” he explained.

Samuels added that the suspects usually work in a duo or group of three and either come into the store or stand close to the entrance.

“Using the element of surprise, one or two suspects greet you in a very confident and overly familiar manner. They pretend to know who you are, acting as if you don’t remember them,” he explained.

“They come across as ‘playful old friends,’ punching or patting the victim’s arm or stomach and greeting them with a handshake or hug. They work together, so while one suspect distracts you, another could bump you, and within seconds, they have pickpocketed victims’ cellphones and or wallets. When the victim realises what has happened, the suspects have fled the scene,” he said.

Last month, Northglen News reported on a similar incident at a fast-food outlet in Durban North.

In that instance, an Umgeni Park resident, who was aware of the crime trend, helped foil the attempted theft of a cellphone.
