Here’s what social media has to say about Prime

Do you think the latest hydration drink is worth the hype, and R40 for a bottle?

IT was like Black Friday all over again, but this time mainly for South African teens and tweens, as they stood in queues from as early as 05:00 outside their nearest Checkers to get their hands on a bottle of Prime, the new hydration drink that has been trending on the socials since yesterday.

So why exactly is this drink so popular?

It’s promoted by mega influencers Logan Paul, an American wrestler and actor, and KSI, who is a video creator, rapper and boxer. They both have millions of subscribers and billions of views which has made Prime the most sought-after drink at the moment.

When it initially made an appearance on the market, fans could not wait to join the hype and saw themselves purchasing a bottle at a ridiculous price of about R700!

Then Checkers came along and said they would start stocking the drink at R39.99 a bottle, but limited it to eight per customer. Young South Africans went crazy, which actually makes one wonder if they’re aware that the drink carries a warning that prohibits children below the age of 15 to consume it. Even Facebook Marketplace is starting to fill up with sales of the drink.

According to the electrolyte beverage’s label, 10% of it is coconut-water-based. It contains BCAAs (essential amino acids) for muscle recovery, antioxidants and vitamins to refresh, replenish and refuel.

But what does the social media jury say?

TikTokkers have been blatantly honest, with many saying that the taste does not live up to the hype, while others have given it high ratings for taste and appearance. One thing is for sure, Prime scores 10/10 for its marketing strategy!

Here’s what a few tweeters thought of Prime [sic]:

Personally I don’t think prime will compete with Powerade or energade in South Africa.

What’s so special about Prime drinks? Or is it because it’s a foreign drink and people in South Africa likes foreign stuff?
