Fire claims 35 shacks in Malacca Road Settlement

Donations of household items, food, clothing and cash can be made.

A FIRE, which broke out in the Malacca Road informal settlement this morning, has left 130 people displaced, including two babies and seven children.
Arianne Hayes-Hill of The Seed Fund, a non-profit organisation, that takes care of the informal settlement, said the fire started after 01:00.
“One of the woman heard the fire and woke up. She then shouted to everyone else to evacuate,” said Hayes-Hill.
“When I called the fire department, they said they had already received a call and firemen had been deployed. When I got to Malacca Road they were already extinguishing the fire,” continued Hayes-Hill.
She commended the fireman and said they had acted quickly to contain the fire.

“Unfortunately it means that these affected people now have to start from scratch as they have lost everything. We appeal to the community to come forward with the essentials, she added.
The Seed Fund is appealing for donations of clothing for men, women, children and babies; bedding, household items, food stuff, infant formula and nappies.
Donations can be dropped off at the community centre at the settlement on 7 Legacy Road.
