One of the suspects opened fire on pursuing officers in a foot chase through a local golf course.

A SUSPECT has been arrested for his alleged involvement in the robbery of two people at Blue Lagoon Park on Monday morning.

The incident occurred at about 05:40 and led to a shootout between response officers pursuing the suspects involved.

According to Marshall Security spokesperson Tyron Powell, they were alerted to the incident via a WhatsApp Crime Alert group.

“We learned that two members of the public were held up at gunpoint by two suspects who had robbed them of their cellphone while on their morning walk. Our officers responded to the last known location of the suspects and spotted them a few minutes later on a well-known golf course on Masabalala Yengwa Avenue (NMR Avenue).”

“Our officers gave chase while the Durban Central SAPS were informed. During the chase, the armed suspects fired multiple shots towards our officers, and our officers then returned fire. After a lengthy foot chase, one suspect was eventually apprehended in a small bush on the golf course, and upon searching him, the cellphone that was taken during the armed robbery was found in his possession,” Powell said.

He added that the second suspect evaded arrest by running through a dense bush, however, a firearm with one live round, as well as a laptop, were recovered because they were dropped by the second suspect.

“The arrested suspect was transported to Durban Central SAPS and will be facing charges of armed robbery, attempted murder, possession of an unlicensed firearm, possession of ammunition, as well as being in possession of suspected stolen items,” he said.
