Duo linked to uMhlanga muggings arrested

Police found a knife on one of the suspects during the arrest.

TWO suspects were arrested by members of the Durban North SAPS Rapid Response team in connection with the muggings of pedestrians on the N2/M41 interchange last Friday.

According to Captain Raymond Deokaran, spokesperson for the Durban North SAPS, police acted on information received that two suspects were planning on robbing pedestrians on the day.

“Members of our Rapid Response Unit set up an observation spot and spotted the two suspects walking around and looking for a spot where they could hide without being seen. The suspects had hidden near a footbridge where other incidents had taken place.

“The suspects were taken into custody. Police recovered a reflective vest and a knife from one of the suspects. After being brought to the Durban North police station for questioning, the duo confessed to robbing mostly female pedestrians near the footbridge,” he said.

Deokaran revealed that information also led police to a third person to whom the suspects were allegedly selling items.

“Police then arrested a third suspect in Eastbury who confessed to knowingly purchasing stolen items from the duo. He was charged for being in possession of stolen items while the other two suspects were charged with being in possession of a dangerous weapon,” he said.
