Royal birthday wish for uMhlanga centenarian

Maria celebrated her 100-year-old birthday on November 11 with a congratulatory card mailed especially to her from the British King and Queen.

RECEIVING a birthday card from King Charles III and Queen Consort Camilla is something that does not happen every day.

That was the case for Umhlanga Rocks’ Maria Choldwill who celebrated her 100-year-old birthday on November 11 with a congratulatory card from the British monarchs – mailed especially to her.

Sitting in the lounge of her beautiful home, the centenarian spoke to Northglen News about the honour of having received the card, and did not shy away from reminiscing about the ‘good old days’.

Maria said receiving the card from the King and Queen was lovely and exciting.

“It was also a bit sad because I did not get to meet the late Queen Elizabeth,” said Maria.

She said the recipe for her longevity and good health has been working hard throughout the years. She said her Catholic family of three children, eight grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren have been her joy in life.

“Life is only good if you make it good – it’s up to you. Show good examples of hard work, and pray and cook good food for your family. The bonds of love will be strong and keep you strong.

“We had a good life – we understood how to live as husband and wife and care for our children. We went on many holidays, and I regret nothing that has happened in my life over the years,” she said.

Maria has been living in uMhlanga for the past 20 years. This year had many milestones for her, with a grandson turning 40 and another turning 50. Life is slowing down for Maria, but her family and friends still visit her.

She celebrated her birthday by having lunch with her entire family in her home. The festivities went on for a week, with friends visiting her throughout the week.
