Copper thief nabbed after foot chase in Avoca

The suspect was found in possession of several metres of copper piping as well as brass taps.

A COPPER thief was arrested in the early hours of Tuesday morning on Belmont Road in the Effingham area.

According to Marshall Security spokesperson Tyron Powell, a panic alarm was set off at about 03:00.

“The client had reported that a suspect had stolen several metres of copper piping as well as brass taps. An accurate description of the suspect was relayed to all our officers to be on the lookout for him.”

“A few minutes later, the suspect was spotted by our officer, walking on Hyacinth Road in the Avoca area, and a short foot chase ensued, whereafter the suspect was apprehended. The stolen copper pipes and brass taps were found in his possession,” he said.

Powell added, the Greenwood Park SAPS also arrived on scene.

“Unfortunately, the suspect was released with a warning after the homeowner refused to open a case with the SAPS.”
