Public meeting over proposed Beachwood development

WARD 36 councillor Shontel de Boer has encouraged residents to attend a public meeting on Thursday, November 24 in order to stand collectively against a plan to develop a portion of the Beachwood Country Club.
It is believed a multi-million-rand mixed-use development is earmarked for the space, which includes a hotel, a health studio and even a conference facility.
The meeting has been called by the Friends of Beachwood, a coalition of individuals, organisations and NGOs who stand opposed to development of the land.
De Boer explained that prior to its establishment as a golf course, the Beachwood Golf Course property was utilised as farmland for more than 100 years.

“As I understand it, the developers plan to remove a clause in the title-deed provisions. When the golf course purchased the land, it was clearly restricted for recreational use. That is one of the points of contention as the new development proposal would change that. I encourage residents and affected parties to attend the meeting as this could potentially affect their property values and impact them.
“The proposed development mentions a hotel, a mixed-used development and a conference centre while a small section will remain a golf course. There are several concerns residents have raised, including the upgrading of sewerage infrastructure, the surrounding road network as well as the water supply issue, to name a few,” she said.
De Boer said it was important that residents send their objections individually but also attend the meeting to understand how to move forward.
“The meeting will advise residents what they can do to stop the space from being developed and what the Friends of Beachwood are doing to oppose the development,” she said.
The meeting takes place on Thursday, November 24, at 17:30, at the Beachwood Country Club.
