Conquer obstacle course for The Baby Home

Conquer is a fun non-timed obstacle course race (OCR) team event where the emphasis is on fun, teamwork and helping each other overcome obstacles, all for a good cause.

WHEN Grace Family Church pastor Tom Basson set out to raise funds for the World’s Highest Obstacle Course Race and World’s Highest Marathon (42km event), his hope was to raise R180 000, with any amount over that overall goal going towards various causes including The Baby Home in Glen Anil.

Basson has nearly reached his target, and now the home has partnered with Adventure Obstacle Training (AOT) for a fundraising event called Conquer on Saturday, October 29.

Local resident Jo Teunissen, who runs the baby home, said she wanted to support Basson’s dream as well as help raise awareness and funds for the home.

“I’m all about community involvement, so when I heard about Tom’s adventure, I wanted to do something that was community-oriented. Trish and Claude Eksteen, who run AOT, are a massive part of the community and have been integral in Tom’s training. Therefore, they seemed the best people to partner with. We all have obstacles and challenges in our lives, and we can overcome our own obstacles if we put our mind to it and get support from the people around us.

“That’s why we decided to call our event Conquer. It is a fun team challenge where you help one another, and work together as a team of six to get over and complete all the various obstacles. We have had a commitment from Rob Bentele from Survivor South Africa who is putting together a team and is challenging anyone who is keen. We also hope to have a few influencers and celebrities join the ranks on the day,” she explained.

The fun, family morning will see participants take on a 2km course packed with obstacles.

“We want to make the event accessible to all and most of all, easily doable,” said course organiser Claude Eksteen. “This isn’t about the fastest time or being an elite athlete; it is about fundraising for a good cause. In all, we hope to have around 20 to 30 obstacles on the day so there will be no shortage of fun. We are also encouraging people to dress up, and we’ll leave it up to their imagination. We hope to add some vibrancy and colour to the fundraising efforts with a prize for the best-dressed team,” he said.
