Fun outdoor activities to do for adventure-seekers

Adventure seekers are spoilt for choice in South Africa. Which destinations are worth visiting?

After years of chasing the streets and navigating your city, it might seem like nothing can excite you anymore. You’re wrong, there’s a world of adventure waiting for you. If you’re willing to explore your city and this beautiful country, you’ll find heart-pounding, adrenaline-pumping and action-packed adventure at every turn.

To get you started, here are  some of the best things to do for thrill-seekers all across South Africa.

Fun outdoor adventures on the ground

Theme Parks

Theme Parks are the best way to get that adrenaline pumping! Here you’ll find everything from fast to high and wet rides. You can consider  the Tower of Terror at Gold Reef City, the Torpedo Kamikaze at Ushaka Marine World, and Tobogganing at Cool Runnings in Cape Town.

Paintball

Settle old scores and battle it out on the paintball field with your friends! There are plenty of places throughout South Africa that have paintball. Try Field 19 in Fourways, Predator Paintball in Polokwane, or Ruins Bloemfontein Paintball and Airsoft field. If you’re scared it might hurt too much, you can swop paint-filled balls for air-filled ones.

Sandboarding

Snow in South Africa is scarce, but do you know what we do have plenty of? Sand! So, some clever oke took the idea of snowboarding and applied it to sand, and now there is  sandboarding. Anywhere with sand dunes or deserts is fair game, from the Atlantis Dunes to Jeffrey’s Bay and Kakamas.

Fun outdoor activities in water

Water Rafting

South Africa is very fortunate to have rivers with wild, raging rapids. They’re perfect for water rafting! If you’re not afraid of water and can swim, you should give this adrenaline rush a go. So far, there is  Orange River Rafting in the Northern Cape, White Water Rafting in the Free State, and Karoo River Rafting in the Eastern Cape.

Shark Cage Diving

This one is not for the faint-hearted! You need to have nerves of steel to try it out.  Even with the cage, this is the scariest thing you could ever do in water! The main places where you can find shark cage diving is in Durban and Cape Town.

Surfing

The  coast is full of beautiful beaches with great waves. Next time you’re holidaying in a coastal town, check out a local surfing school and learn how to surf. There are surfing schools littered on the coast from Ballito to East London, Plettenburg Bay, and Cape Town.

Fun outdoor activities up in the air

Parasailing and Paragliding

Take in the magnificent scenery and breath-taking coastline of South Africa from the skies. You can take in the sights over land as you paraglide, and over water as you parasail. The best views are over Table Mountain, the Wild Coast, and the Magaliesburg Mountain Range.

Ziplining

When you’re ziplining, you can travel at speeds as fast as 120km/h for as long as 2 km! That’s super-fast! Some of the most popular  spots are the UnReal Zip2000 at Sun City, the Stormsriver Adventures Zipline at Tsitsikamma National Park, and the Drakensberg Canopy Zipline at Champagne Valley.

Bungee Jumping

For some heart-pounding action, try bungee jumping. You can try the world’s highest bridge jump at Bloukrans Bridge, or go bungee swinging at Moses Mabhida Stadium or the Soweto Towers. It’s up to you whether you want to swing back and forth or drop straight down!

After the adrenaline rush, you’ll definitely need an extra boost of energy. So grab the Azishe Meal with a FREE energy drink, a cheeseburger, and small chips for only R59.90. Find a Steers® near you for your next action-packed activity.
