uMhlanga’s Romario Valentine pens first book for the environment

The Grade Five learner at Reddam House Umhlanga said the feedback since the launch of his books has been overwhelmingly positive.

AT the age of 11, Romario Valentine’s impact on the world and the natural environment has been immense.

Not only is he the youngest ambassador for the environmental NPO, Ocean Sole, he has also raised more than R50 000 for bird conservation in Durban and the Western Cape, and he has participated in more than 230 beach clean-ups. Just last year, he featured in an internationally published book, What A Wonderful World.

The eco-warrior, who hails from uMhlanga, can now add published author to the list.

He recently launched his book, Protect Our Planet: Take Action with Romario and Eco-Projects and Green Tips, aimed at fellow Earth guardians.

Romario’s book covers topics on sustainability, ocean and bird conservation, the importance of water, as well as the threat of plastic pollution.

“My passion to protect our planet inspired me to create an environmental guidebook for the youth and myself. I found it challenging to get access to information that was simple yet educational and creative. I hope it will encourage other young people to become Earth guardians. I believe that if children get involved with protecting the environment from a young age, it will help them become better citizens and leave a positive legacy for future generations,” he explained.

He added the book also features exciting scientific experiments, art activities and guidance on environmental jobs the youth can do.

“I’m honoured to be given such an opportunity at such a young age, and people have been very positive with their comments and reviews. I’m grateful to my parents and to everyone who has supported me on my environmental journey. This project has taught me the importance of teamwork and being surrounded by love and positive people who uplift you,” he said.

Adding to his growing list of accolades, Romario was recently awarded an Owlet Award by Birdlife South Africa.
The award recognises and celebrates individuals who have contributed to the conservation of the country’s birds.
