Angler hooks dead body on Virginia Beach

The naked body was initially thought to be a piece of driftwood.

AN angler on Virginia Beach discovered he had hooked a dead body on Thursday morning.

Ronald Pillay said he felt something heavy on the end of his line when he began reeling his line towards the pier at the beach.

“Initially, I thought I had hooked a piece of driftwood just beyond the shore break,” Pillay explained. “Once I reeled it in closer, I was in absolute shock that it was a dead body. In all my time as a fisherman, I’ve never seen anything like this. My son who was with me was shivering in fear.”

Pillay alerted Durban North SAPS, and the body was pulled to shore by fellow angler Neran Chetty.

“We thought it was a piece of driftwood because there was something sticking out of the water. It turns out it was this man’s hand, which was stiff and pointing upwards. His other hand was wrapped around his stomach. I pulled the body to shore, and the man was completely naked. We aren’t sure what happened, but it’s very sad to see a dead body. In my 20 years fishing, I’ve never experienced anything like this,” Chetty said.

Durban North SAPS spokesperson Captain Raymond Deokaran confirmed that police had responded to the incident.

An inquest docket is set to be opened, and a cause of death had not yet been determined.
