Locals urged to tee-off for charity at Mount Edgecombe golf course

Childhood cancer NPO, Rainbows and Smiles is hoping residents will get behind the upcoming golf day.

CREATING awareness around childhood cancer is something Durban North resident Denise Towell is passionate about.

As regional project manager in KZN for non-profit organisation (NPO), Rainbows and Smiles, Towell is hoping residents will get behind the organisation’s upcoming golf day.

“I’ve been involved with them for six years now, and Rainbows and Smiles believes in providing hope, fun and laughter to help families through the childhood cancer journey. We often work with the medical teams and facilities responsible for treating children with cancer, to support and complement their work. I do believe that early detection is key, which is why creating awareness around childhood cancer is so important. We believe in the spirit of community. We know that together we can because children can’t fight cancer alone,” she said.

“Every day in South Africa, almost three families will hear that their child has been diagnosed with cancer. What is scary is that this is still only a third of the total estimated cases that occur in our country. Therefore, in addition to directly supporting children, educating South Africans about childhood cancer is our passion! With your support, we can continue to grow and continue supporting the fighters and their families,” she said.

Fellow ambassador for the organisation Debbie Riggien also touched on the significance of creating awareness.

“When my daughter was diagnosed with cancer 12 years ago, I didn’t know of any organisations that dealt with childhood cancer. At the time, it felt like we were the only parents with a child with cancer looking for support. The organisations I did come across were overseas support groups. When I found out about Rainbows and Smiles, I felt this was an organisation who could help other parents in similar situations. I don’t think there is enough awareness created, and that’s what Rainbows and Smiles is trying to change,” she said.
