uMhlanga can still rock this Tourism Month
Although locals and visitors can't swim at the beaches, they can still take a walk on the sand and along the promenade.
AS the city is set to celebrate Tourism Month this September, several beaches north of Durban have closed due to a possible sewage spill which resulted in numerous dead fish.
The closure also comes merely weeks before the school holidays which start on September 30 and end on October 10.
So, what are locals and tourists going to do in uMhlanga now if they can’t ride the surf and feel the waves hit their bodies?

Weedah Jappie of uMhlanga Rocks Tourism says there is still plenty to do.
“Tourism Month is all about focusing on and celebrating the industry that has a major impact on the South African economy. There are several activations and tours lined up which require local involvement,” she said.
“It’s an excellent way to steer people’s minds from the negativity currently happening in our area,” she added.
She said locals and tourists are still able to enjoy the beauty of our beaches by walking on the sand and along the promenade.
They can also be kept entertained by visiting the Mind Game Escape in Chartwell Drive, where they host various intellectual and fun games.
“There are also several restaurants and night spots along Chartwell Drive to support, as the restaurant industry is also taking a knock due to the beach closure. It’s important to support our local businesses,” she said.
For the more daring individuals, there’s scuba diving as well as boat trips with the Sharks Board KZN and audio-visuals and shark dissection to watch, and museum tours.
“There’s still a lot to do in uMhlanga, and we encourage our locals to support tourism and the business sector,” said Jappie.
